Couplet Coffee exists to make coffee fun and approachable, and Gefen Skolnick built it for the people she felt LA coffee had stopped speaking to. The beans come from family-run farms and the current matcha program uses ceremonial-grade matcha from Kagoshima, Japan. Skolnick is an LA native who came up with Couplet while studying computer science at UCLA, and she describes herself as a proud queer woman and coffee lover. She had a devoted following online well before the flagship opened, built on limited-edition drops and storytelling. Five rooms are open now: the Echo Park flagship, plus downtown, Santa Monica, Hollywood and West Hollywood. The West Hollywood one took over a former Starbucks at Santa Monica and Fairfax in April 2026. We go for the bananas-and-cream matcha. Couplet sells its Kagoshima matcha wholesale to other LA businesses as well, so there is a decent chance you have had it somewhere else without knowing.
